Legal AI was one of the first categories LLMs unlocked—a text-heavy, large market ripe for disruption with AI. To date, hundreds of millions of dollars have been poured into building legal AI tools for law firms, but not enough energy has been directed into serving the needs of the in-house counsel with a best-in-class purpose built tool.
General Counsels (GCs) are trusted advisors: a CEO’s first call internally when a legal issue comes up at a company. Today they’re drowning under increasingly complex regulations. Where an external law firm may have practices dedicated to specific legal areas like employment, M&A, privacy, etc., in-house teams cover the whole range of legal questions. A single team has to handle endless questions from other functions, draft employment and HR policies, conduct ad hoc legal research, review stacks of contracts, and many other time-consuming legal tasks. They are often so swamped that they end up outsourcing even basic questions to expensive outside counsel. Between the high cost of traditional legal resources and the highly varied work that in-house legal teams do, automating the work of internal legal teams has historically been hard. With the rise of LLMs and AI, that’s changing.
